RE: snowbirds with young kids going to rgv

Most parks are considered "adult" parks in the winter. They do not permit children for more than 2 weeks while visiting grandpa & grandma. There many vacancies and some parks are willing to bend the rules a little. While there may be some parks that allow children long term, I am not aware of them. Hopefully someone will be able to help you.

RE: RGV park

With about 500 parks in the Valley don't make a long term commitment until you get down here & look at many to find one you like.

RE: Pepe's in the RGV

We were at Pepe's Friday afternoon. It was open & there were about 75 - 100 people there. There was live country music, loud & slightly off key but many were dancing & having a good time. There have been some increases to the menu prices, margaritas were $3.00 or $12.00 a pitcher. We did not eat there but our favorites from last year are the catfish, fish & shrimp platter & the nacho supremes, big enough for 2 or more people. We went planning to pick up an entertainment schedule but it was not yet available. They have live music most days from 2:00 to 6:00 and last year a few evenings as well. One entertainer I recognized that will be there is Diamond Joe. Things should start hopping there soon as more Winter Texans return. To get to Pepe's go south on Conway just past Chimney Park & watch for a sign on the right. Levee construction appears to be done, just drive slowly as the road is rough & you drive right over the top of the levee. Access is not a problem. For those of you who have not been there Pepe's is a unique open air club with a thatched roof right on the banks of the Rio Grande River. Well worth a visit.

RE: Winterizing for Snowbirds

Live in Oklahoma. It can get cold. Our first time as snowbirds this year and I've picked up a lot of good info from old hands. But still have ??? about whether or not to turn off propane to water heaters or just turn down to vacation. Of course heat (heat pump/propane furnace backup system) will be on 55-60 degrees. Yes, water will be turned off at meter. Thoughts? If you turn off the water, you better turn off the water heater. Saves a little gas too. Also a good idea to turn off the gas in case you would develop a gas leak in the line or at the appliance.

RE: RGV

Windier near the gulf, a little more fog & rain. RV Park prices may be a little higher. Donna to Mission is our favorite area. Then if you like to fish or walk the beach you may want to be near the gulf. With about 500 parks in the Valley what I suggest is just come down, get a spot for a week & look at many parks until you find one you like. You won't need reservations except at a few of the highest rated parks.

RE: Tent camping in the RGV

State parks are usually good for tent camping but the only 2 in the area that I know of are Corpus Christi Lake & Falcon lake. Both are quite a ways from the Valley. Bentsen is also nearby but I think they stopped all camping a few years ago. That is correct, no camping of any kind at Bentsen & no motorized traffic except the park trolley. The park is now part of the World Birding Center.

RE: Texas Valley

With about 500 RV Parks in the Rio Grande Valley I always suggest that you just come down, find a place for a few days to a week & visit many parks until you find what you like. Reservations are not needed except at a few of the highest rated & most expensive parks. For dentists you will want to go to Nuevo Progresso south of Donna. Ask several people in your park for recommendations on a dentist. Many of us use the dentists in Mexico with very good results. Nuevo Progresso is the safest border crossing in the area. For saltwater & surf fishing you will want to be in the east valley. There is good lake fishing at Falcon Lake near Zapata. This is west of the Valley a ways.

RE: Do many of you snowbird in a TT?

We are in a park with about 300 sites, about 100 are occupied now & there are 2 travel trailers. Last year when the park was nearly full there were 5 or 6 travel trailers. Our 1st year snowbirding was in a travel trailer.

RE: 5th Wheel Lot

There usually are several but I have no specifics. You could try calling the office, they usually keep a list. IMO there are many nicer parks to own a lot including the one across the street W&I Park & Green Gate Grove on Bentsen Palm Drive.
